On any given night in Australia 1 in 200 people are homeless (ABS). There is no particular way to define who is homeless as it involves men, women and children who for diverse reasons experience homelessness.
Annually as part of National Homeless Prevention Week (the first full week of August) BASE Services leads a week-long campaign that is a testament to the power of community action. This initiative not only raises awareness about homelessness in the Toowoomba Region and much-needed funds for the Basement Soup Kitchen but also fosters care and connection among community members and those experiencing homelessness by bringing local services and businesses together to provide a range of services at our annual Homeless Persons Expo including medical and allied health care professionals (including doctors, dentists, optometrists, podiatrists and massage therapists), housing support, haircuts, and the provision of practical resources such as toiletries, food, blankets, and clothing. We also extend our care to homeless pets with veterinary services, dog washing and free animal food.
We are currently seeking hairdressers, barbers, medical and allied health care professionals, including doctors, dentists, optometrists, podiatrists and massage therapists to get involved in our next event, please contact BASE Services to find out more.
